There’s no such thing as a good cheap steak. I should have incanted this truism before I ordered an entrecote off a 22€ three course prix-fixe menu. The fact that I’d just been to Le Relais de L’Entrecôte made my actions even more inexcusable.

Here’s the good news: for a three course meal, this place is very reasonably priced. Unfortunately, this is one place where you might just get what you pay for. My dish was one of the saddest pieces of steak I’ve even been served. I may have eaten half of it. The “béarnaise” sauce tasted like mayo with some paprika stirred in. I was so underwhelmed that I didn’t even remember to take a picture. The veal Christian ordered was equally mediocre. The crème brulee somehow managed to taste like an omelet.

To be fair, not everything was that bad. The duck was actually quite nice, and the pear in wine sauce with vanilla ice cream was delicious. Not a great success rate, but at least they weren’t completely devoid of all redeeming value.
